Fil

Philip Kushlan - Graduate Student

Philip is a first year Masters student. He joined the lab Spring 2008 in his final semester as an undergraduate at UM. Fil is passionate about corals and coral reefs and is interested in symbiosis. Philip's research focuses on aspects of the symbiosis in aphids associated with nitrogen metabolism. currently he, is participating in annotating amino acid metabolism genes in the pea aphid genome.

Derek

Derek Jones - Research Associate

Derek is back! This time, having graduated with BS in Biology from UM, he returns to the lab as the research technician. Derek is working on several microarray studies in the green peach aphid. Ultimately he plans on going to Med. School.

Kate

Kate Hurley - Undergraduate Researcher

Kate joined the lab summer 2007 at the end of her freshman year. Kate is using stable isotope anlayses to study aphid/plant interactions. She also plans to attend medical school.

Anne Chen - Undergraduate Researcher

Anne joined the lab Spring 2008 and is working with Fil Kushlan on developing good methods for assessing aphid performance on artificial diet. Summer 2009 Anne is a College of Arts and Sciences Summer Research Program for Underrepresented Minorities and Women Fellow.

Isabel Llanes - Undergraduate Researcher

Isa joined the lab summer 2009. She is contributing to the annotation of the pea aphid genome and will commence some stable isotope experiments in the coming weeks.

  FORMER LAB MEMBERS
Wenting

Wenting Huang - Graduate Student Fall 2007 - Summer 2009

Wenting joined the lab Fall 2007, as the lab's founding graduate student, having completed her undergraduate studies at Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Wenting was interested in the evolution and maintenance of sexual and asexual reproduction and contributed to annotation of sex determination genes in the pea aphid genome.

JUlia

Julia Schwartz - Undergraduate Researcher Summer & Fall 2008

Julia joined the lab summer 2008 at the end of her junior year as a summer honors fellow. She made her mark in the lab as the Queen of Genome Annotation and remains the individual with the most electic academic interests (English & Math major/Biology minor). Julia patricipated in annotating amino acid metabolism genes in the pea aphid genome.

Tania Wyss - Graduate Student Research Assistant Summer 2007 - Spring 2008

Tania, a graduate student in Dr Dave Janos' lab, and RA in the Wison Lab worked on serveral projects associated with symbiont genome evolution in the aphid Myzus persicae.

Gabe

Gabriel Walton - Undergraduate Researcher Fall 2007 - Spring 2008

Gabe joined the lab Fall 2007. He learned to script in PERL and annotate nitrogen metabolism genes in the aphid genome. Gabe spent the summer of 2008 as an HHMI scholar Harvard University's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Fall 2008 he worked in Dr Athula Wikramanayake's lab.

Gabe is graduating from UM Spring 2009 and heading off to University of Pennsylvania, to start in their PhD program in Genomics and Computational Biology. Well done Gabe!

Diana

Diana Liu - Undergraduate Researcher Spring 2007 - Fall 2007

Diana joined the lab Spring 2007 in her freshman year. In her first semester in the lab she was a key player in an experiment quantifying the performance of different Myzus persicae genotypes on cabbage seedlings. Diana has incredible skills in keeping a lab notebook and paying attention to the details, she plans to attend medical school.

Christie

Christie Buchovecky - Undergraduate Student Worker Spring 2007 - Fall 2007

Chrisite joined the lab Spring 2007 in her sophmore year. During Summer 2007 she participated in the College of Arts and Sciences Summer Research Program for Underrepresented Minorities and Women working on a project describing tranposable element related sequences in aphid genomes. Christie plans on going to graduate school Fall 2009 to pursue her passionate interest in human genetic disorders in particular, autism.

Fall 2009 Christie will start gradate school at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX. Well done Christie!

Derek

Derek Jones - Undergraduate Researcher Fall 2006 - Spring 2007

Derek worked in the lab his junior year. He is a biology major with interests in ecology, evolution, and symbiosis.

Arjun

Arjun Sondhi - Undergraduate Researcher Fall 2006 - Spring 2007

Arjun joined the lab as a freshman, his first semester on campus.
