Hibiscus tiliaceus

Mahoe

Malvaceae

Pantropical (EPPC II)
Spreading evergreen shrub or small tree, mostly littoral in the Old and New World tropics.

Coriaceous 6-8” nearly round leaf on rapidly growing and often sprawling small trees. Solitary flowers are white to yellow with a red base.  Everblooming, the 4” flowers are yellow when first open in the morning and maroon when they fall at day’s end.

Buoyant wood used as cork. Yields fiber for cordage.

Traditional Tahitian “grass” skirts are made from finely split bark of the hau as it is known  in Hawaii.  In Hawaii, the roots of the tree grow rapidly, expanding into impenetrable thickets.  Blossoms are ancient symbols of the human soul because of the color change evidenced from morning to evening.
