These posted notes are not a substitute for attending class or
reading the textbook. A great deal is said in class that never makes it to
the electronic blackboard, and if you're not there you'll miss it.
Here are the lectures, listed by topic.
Lecture 1 -
Introduction to Genetics: The Structure of Genes and Genomes (Chapter 1, 2)
Lecture
2 - Gene Structure: Genomes & Chromosomes (Chapter 2)
Lecture 3 -
Gene Function: Transcription and Translation (Chapter 3)
Lecture 4 -
DNA Replication (Chapter 4)
Lecture
5 - Mendelian (nuclear) and Non-Mendelian (organelle) Inheritance (Chgapter 5)
Exam I will be given on Friday, May 30 at regular class time, and will
cover all material from the first five lectures. TEXT READINGS: CHAPTERS

Sample Exam
I from a past semester. Don't expect yours to be the same. Mwahaha.

EXAM II (100 points) will be given on Friday, June 6 and cover
all material Lectures 6 - 10.
Here's a
Sample Exam II and its KEY. Your exam won't be exactly the same, of course, and you should use
it only to test yourself--not to study the material.

Lecture
11 - Gene Interactions (Chapter 14)
Lecture
12 - Transposable Genetic Elements (Chapter 10, page 331 - 339)
Lecture 13 -

Lecture
14 - Introduction to Genomics and Biotechnology (Chapters 8, 9)
EXAM III (100 points) will be given on Friday, June 13 and will cover
Lectures 11 - 14.
Here's an old Exam III
Just for fun. It is really NOT a good idea to use old exams to study
this material. It's okay to test yourself, but don't expect to get
an in-depth knowledge of this material (or to do well on your own exam) just by studying old exams. (That's why there's no key, so please don't ask.)

Lecture
15 - The Genetics of Development (Chapter 16)
Lecture 16 -
Population Genetics (Chapter 17)
Lecture 17 -
Genetics and Evolution (Chapter 19)
Lecture 18 -
Quantitative Genetics (Chapter 18)
Final Exam will be given on Friday, June 20 at regular class time.
It will cover material from all lectures since Exam III. Sorry, but
there's no sample
exam this time. You know the format well enough by now. Use your notes and text
readings as a STUDY GUIDE.)
The LAST CHANCE to take any make up exams will be THURSDAY, JUNE 21 AT
11:00AM IN SA 102 (first year laboratory room). If you are taking a make up
exam, please email me one day in advance so I'll know to print an exam for
you.
ALL MAKE UP EXAMS ARE IN ESSAY/SHORT ANSWER FORMAT. NO EXCEPTIONS.
If you miss the final exam, have a valid
excuse and are passing the course at the time of the final, you will be
given a grade of "I" (Incomplete) for the course, and have one year to
take the final exam. If you fail to do so, the "I" will automatically
change to an "F."
If you miss the final exam and are not passing the course at the
time of the final exam, you will receive an "F" for the course. Bottom
line: you can still salvage your grade if you at least show up. Study
hard and go for it!
THE HONOR CODE IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY HERE. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT CHEATING, YOU
WILL BE GIVEN A FINAL GRADE OF "F" FOR THE COURSE AND THE MATTER WILL BE
TURNED OVER TO TO THE HONOR COUNCIL.
