These posted notes are not a substitute for attending class or reading the textbook. A great deal is said in class that never makes it to this electronic blackboard, and if you're not there you'll miss it.

Here are the lectures, listed by topic.

  • Lecture 1 - Introduction to Genetics: Transmission (Mendelian) Genetics (Chapter 1, 2)
  • Lecture 2 - Single Gene Inheritance: Autosomal and Sex-Linked Wonders (Chapter 2)
  • Lecture 3 - Independent Assortment; Non-Mendelian Inheritance (Chapter 3)
  • Lecture 4 - Mapping Linked Chromosomes (Chapter 4)
  • Lecture 5 - Genetics of Microbes (Chapter 5)

Exam I will be given on Friday, June 5 at regular class time, and will cover all material from Lectures 1-5, including text readings.

  • Lecture 6 - Gene Interactions (Chapter 6)
  • Lecture 7 - DNA structure and replication (Chapter 7)
  • Lecture 8 - Transcription and Transcript Processing (Chapter 8)
  • Lecture 9 - Gene Expression: Protein Translation (Chapter 9)
  • Lecture 10 - Control of Gene Expression in Microbes (Chapter 10)

EXAM II (100 points) will be given on Friday, June 12 and cover all material in Lectures 6 - 10.

  • Lecture 11 - Control of Gene Expression in Eukaryotes (Chapter 11)
  • Lecture 12 - The Genetics of Development (Chapter 12)
  • Lecture 13 - Mutations at the Molecular Level (Chapter 15)
  • Lecture 14 - Chromosomal Mutations (Chapter 16)

EXAM III (100 points) will be given on Friday, June 19 and will cover Lectures 11 - 14.

  • Lecture 15 - Transposable Genetic Elements (Chapter 15)
  • Lecture 16 - Population Genetics and Evolution (Chapters 17, 19)
  • Lecture 17 - Quantitative Genetics (Chapter 18)
  • Lecture 18 - Techniques in Biotechnology (Chapter 20)

  • Final Exam will be given on Friday, June 26 at regular class time. It will cover material from all lectures since Exam III.

If you miss the final exam, have a valid excuse and are passing the course at the time of the final, you will be given a grade of "I" (Incomplete) for the course, and have one year to take the final exam. If you fail to do so, the "I" will automatically change to an "F."
If you miss the final exam and are not passing the course at the time of the final exam, you will receive an "F" for the course. Bottom line: you can still salvage your grade if you at least show up. Study hard and go for it!

THE HONOR CODE IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY HERE. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT CHEATING, YOU WILL BE GIVEN A FINAL GRADE OF "F" FOR THE COURSE AND THE MATTER WILL BE TURNED OVER TO TO THE HONOR COUNCIL.
