I. ELEMENTARY CHEMISTRY

 A. Draw the electron configurations for the following atoms.  Which of those atoms would you expect to have similar proportions.

B. Calcium (20Ca) and Chlorine (17C1) can combine to form the salt calcium chloride.  Based on the number of electrons, what would the molecular formula be?  Which atom becomes the cation?

 C. If Carbon has a valence of 4, and hydrogen has a valence of 1, what is the chemical structure of methane when carbon combines with hydrogen?

 D. Sketch a water molecule, showing its shape and electron shells with its covalent bands.  Indicate areas that are slightly negative and positive that enables water molecule to form hydrogen bands.  Why is ice less dense than water in the liquid state?
