Biology 216

Systemic Physiology Laboratory

Policies and Procedures

1.  Attendance:   It is the responsibility of every student to attend lab sessions regularly.  You are expected to be at your assigned lab stations when the class begins.  Excessive tardiness may result in a lowering of your grade.  If you have a legitimate excuse forcing you to miss a lab session, see me in advance.  The following are not legitimate:  Tickets to sporting events; missed a ride to class; golf, frisbee, etc.; oversleeping; not feeling adequately prepared; the sniffles; or lycanthropy.  You will be working in teams  for some experiments and your absence may cause problems.  Every student is expected to participate in every experiment.  In the event of an absence, you will receive a 0 for the lab reports missed.  There will be no make-ups.

2.  Lab Reports:   Lab reports will be collected weekly.  When you come to class be prepared to hand in your lab reports from the previous week.  The reports should reflect your  independent work.  They are not to be completed as a team.  Your grade for the course will be based primarily on your lab reports.  In addition, class participation and attendance will be considered in determining your final grade.

3.  Honor Code: It is the policy of the Department of Biology to automatically award a failing grade to any student caught cheating in a course.  The act of cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying another student's laboratory reports, making your lab reports available to another student, turning in work that is not your own and plagiarism.  The University of Miami Honor Code will be enforced at all times.  Please keep this in mind when doing your assignments.

4.  Textbooks:   We will be using A Laboratory Guide to Human Physiology by Stuart Ira Fox and PhysioLaboratory Simulations in Physiology by Peter Zao as the primary lab manuals.  We may supplement this with other material when necessary.  You are expected to bring your lab manuals to every lab session.
