In the world of Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS), my name is Evan Hawke. I am a life member of the Single Action Shooting Society, or SASS. SASS was founded over twenty years ago as a fantasy shooting sport. Every member must choose a shooting alias and adopt a persona from the old west or the silver screen. The two most important rules of SASS are:
1. Be Safe, and
2. Have FUN!

There are SASS clubs from Norway to Australia. Currently there are
over 44,000 people who have joined SASS. Each member must choose
a unique alias and is issued a numbered badge. No two numbers or
aliases can be the same. For more information about SASS, click on

I was introduced to CAS by one of my best friends, Ralph
West, aka Buckskin Kiowa Rufus. He had joined SASS but had not shot
a match yet. We took a trip one Sunday morning over to Naples, Florida
and visited the Southwest Florida Gunslingers just to see what all the
fuss was about. We were hooked!
Shortly thereafter, we heard of a SASS club starting
in Fort Lauderdale and we visited them. This was it, I had to do
this!
I went home and called SASS headquarters in California and joined up. Evan Hawke, SASS# 19620 was born. It took me a month or so to get the guns I needed to shoot a match. My first shoot was with the South Florida Renegades in Clewiston, Florida in October, 1998. Unfortunately, this club is no longer with us but before it closed, I was able to shoot with them for over a year.
When my good buddy Buckskin Kiowa Rufus got his guns we
started shooting every chance we had. About a year or so later, another
good friend got hooked and he joined us.
Here we are, Me, Buckskin Rufus, and Redland Jack.
The three of us try to make the monthly shoots at the Gold Coast Gunslingers in Ft. Lauderdale and the Southwest Florida Gunslingers in Naples every month. In addition, I try to go to as many of the state and regional shoots as I can each year. At these shoots I have been fortunate to meet some of the best shooters in the sport.
