Savage Invitational Golf Tournament

Rules and Regulations

"There are the Rules of Golf, and then there are the Laws of the Executive Committee!"

1.  The Savage Invitational is intended as a friendly golf tournament and reunion of faculty, graduate students,  and alumni of the University of Miami and the University of Southern California.

2.  Participation in the Savage Invitational Golf Tournament is only through an invitation from one of the founding members, the executive committee, the local committee, or a previous winner.  New participants will be termed prospective members and are not eligible to win the Werman Trophy until they become tournament members. Prospective members must have played in two different venues in consecutive years before becoming members of the Tournament. Prospective members become tournament members at the conclusion of play their second year.  Participants in a Savage Invitational tournament will be eligible to play in the next year's tournament.  Exceptions may be made by the executive committee.  Tournament members who miss two successive tournaments must be re-invited under the provisions above before they are eligible to play in the Savage Invitational again.

3.  The tournament will consist of not more than 36 holes of golf played over two days.  The days need not be consecutive but should have no more than one day between them, if possible, due to time constraints and travel of the participants.  Exceptions may be made by the executive committee.  Participants must complete both days of play or be subject to disqualification by the executive committee.

4.  The tournament will be scored as "Match Play" with two golfers per team.  The winner of the hole in the foursome or group will be awarded 1 Werman point.  If a hole is tied between two golfers, each will be awarded 1/2 Werman point.  Ties between three or more players will result in no points being awarded.  In the case where no points are won, the points are not carried over to the next hole. The team with the greatest number of Werman points at the conclusion of play will win the tournament.

5.  A player may take one "Mulligan" on each 9 holes, with no penalty.  Mulligans may not accumulate.  Other than special Savage Invitational rules or local club rules, USGA rules apply.

6.  In the assignment of teams, an attempt will be made to match lower handicap golfers with higher handicap golfers.  Above all else, this tournament is designed to be fun.  The team pairings will be determined by the executive committee with consultation from the organizing committee

7.  Once a team has been made, it can only be changed with the agreement of both members of the team and the executive committee.  This is to insure pairings of "traditional" teams.

As of 2000 the traditional teams are:
  Bruce Grayson-Roy McDiarmid (The Doughboys)
  Jay Savage-Brian Crother

The definition of a "traditional team" is a team that has played together in at least two successive Savage Invitationals.

8. Members of the same team cannot play in the same foursome or group.  On the first day of a multiple day tournament, groupings will be made on the basis of ability, better golfers playing together.  These groupings will be made by the organizing committee, subject to approval of the executive committee.  On the second day of a multiple day tournament, groupings will be made on the basis of the first days results.  Again, better golfers on the previous round playing together.

9.  As of 1998, five geographical sites have been selected to hold the Savage Invitational.  These sites were selected on the basis of tradition and the availability of players who have regularly participated in the past.  The five sites are:
 Location                                                                             Date                                                                       Organizer
Miami, FL                                                           Years ending in "0" and "5"                                                       Grayson
Grand Junction, CO                                            Years ending in "1" and "6"                                                     S. Werman
Falls Church, VA                                                Years ending in "2" and "7"                                                     R. McDiarmid
San Diego, CA                                                    Years ending in "3" and "8"                                                         Savage
Hammond, LA                                                    Years ending in "4" and "9"                                                       B. Crother
The executive committee reserves the right to change any site when necessary.

10.  The organizing committee is responsible for the location of the tournament play, adequate housing availability, and beer supply.  In addition, the organizing committee must provide a list of participants in the Savage Invitational to the executive committee at least ten days prior to the first day of the open.

11.  Even though the tournament has changed it's name, the trophy for the tournament winners will still be supplied by Steve Werman every year, no exceptions!!!   The tournament trophies must be supplied to the executive committee at the tournament or  within one year following the tournament.
If no trophy is supplied, the following penalties may be assessed by the executive committee:
 a.  if the Werman team wins, there will be an automatic forfiture and the second place team will be awarded the win.
 b.  if the Werman team doesn't win, both Werman brothers must play the first hole of the following years tournament with their pants around their ankles and blowing the Star Spangled Banner on a kazoo.

12.  The rotating trophy (clock) must in some way be modified by the winning team before being awarded the next year.  The clock was retired in 2000 and awarded to Steve Werman in perpetuity.

13. The Savage Invitational executive committee is responsible for the governing of the Savage Invitational, including the establishment and application of the rules of the tournament.    Steve Werman can never be a member of the Executive Committee, ever. O.K. so maybe he can.  In the year 2000 the Executive Committee was expanded to five members and Steve Werman was nominated to join.  Members of the Executive Committee are chosen by the executive committee and can only be replaced if they resign or die!  This is not a democratic process.   The executive committee consists of Senior Member Jay Savage, Senior Member Bruce Grayson, Senior Member Brian Crother, Senior Member Roy McDiramid, and Junior Member Steve Werman.
