Welcome to John's page!

I just started this page; I hope to make it bigger and better soon!

I am a second-year Ph.D. student in Stewart Schultz' lab.  My other committee members are Dave Janos and Ted Fleming.  My 'big brother' in the lab is Doug Scofield, and Summer Scobell is my 'big sister.'

Please feel free to write me at jcozza@fig.cox.miami.edu if you are interested in the graduate program in biology here at University of Miami.

For my Ph.D. research, I plan to study the sex lives of Begonias They are tropical herbs that have separate male and female flowers on the same plant.  I am just now planning my research.  To check it out so far, please see Sex, Lies, and Begonias.

At UM I am also involved with the Gifford Arboretum and the Graduate Student Asssociation.

I have worked as a college teacher, greenhouse curator, program coordinator at a boys and girls club, and horticultural entrepreneur.  I am very interested in community outreach and increasing opportunities for peoples underrepresented in science.

Though I enjoy the 'endless summer' and beautiful tropical flowers here in Miami, my home is New York City.

One project I am working on back in NY is an online interdisciplinary curriculum at New York City Technical College.  The course is for high school seniors and is called Great Thinkers in Science.  I am writing the science activities, but so far only those for the Galileo unit are finished.  Check it out!
