If you are fully opaque, those outside your field will undoubtedly be impressed that your work is so esoteric.

And anyway, you know that very few people will be interested in what you have to say.

Note that even an opaque presentation may be insufficient to deter highly-motivated competitors. You may need further ploys to deter them. The more hints you use from this series of negative examples, the smaller your audience will be.
