Research Apprenticeship at MDCC

Description

Scientists in the field of biomedical research have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to society. It is an important and exciting field that students should be encouraged to pursue. Yet in a community college, a student does not have the same opportunity to participate in research and interact with scientists conducting research as they would in a university. In order to remedy this shortcoming and provide community college students exposure to research, we have developed the Research Apprenticeship Program in a partnership with Miami-Dade Community College. The objective of this program is to give underrepresented minority students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research with a faculty mentor. Through the generosity of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, students in the Research Apprenticeship Program receive financial support to conduct biomedical research with faculty mentors at the University of Miami while attending classes at Miami-Dade Community College. In addition to receiving wages for conducting research, students receive tuition waivers at Miami-Dade Community College. Students completing the program are encouraged to transfer to the University of Miami to participate as Hughes Scholars in the Undergraduate Research Training Program We invite you to look at the kinds of research performed by students in this program and also see where they are now. Individuals interested in participating in the program are invited to apply online.
