Undergraduate Research Traineeships - Hughes ScholarsA large part of what a scientist does is design and carry out their own research program. Too often an undergraduate science major well-suited to carrying out research is discouraged by the heavy, and often seemingly irrelevant, course work. To remedy this we have devised the Undergraduate Research Training Program. The objective is to expose the student to research, let them enjoy the discovery, while they study the fundamentals. At the University of Miami, we encourage all biology majors to conduct independent research with a faculty mentor. Through the generosity of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Hughes Scholars receive a stipend for part time work in a research laboratory that interests them, and a voucher for their tuition at UM. We invite you to look at the research that has been done by students in this program and to see where they are now. Individuals interested in participating in the program are invited to apply online.EligibilityProgram is open to underrepresented minority graduating high school seniors and Miami-Dade Community college students who were formerly Research Apprentices. Graduating seniors should be in the top 5% of their class with a SAT > 1200.The deadline for application for Fall 2006 is April 23th, 2006. |
