Project Succeed Integrated Science Program

for Middle-School Science Teachers
The University of Miami, through its new Department of Education Partnership Grant with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has developed within the College of Arts & Sciences an innovative program of interdisciplinary, integrated science modules for middle-school science classes. The overall goal of this program is to excite students about science and to assist science teachers in teaching science. In this two-part program, now in its second year, experienced UM science faculty and students will work with middle school science teachers in the
  1. Project Succeed Integrated Science (SIS) Summer Workshop
  2. SIS Classroom Science Experiences
to develop innovative, integrated, class-room science activities for middle-school students.

The SIS Summer Science Workshop is an intensive 2-week (9:00-4:00) workshop scheduled for June 16-27, 2003, at the University of Miami, Coral Gables Campus. In this workshop 12 middle-school science teachers (2 from each of 6 schools) will work with UM's SIS Team, consisting of a science faculty member, a graduate student and an undergraduate student in developing and implementing interdisciplinary science modules on the theme "Global Change". The workshop provides the theory and application with hands-on activities that are relevant to the teachers' classes. Participants will receive 3 graduate credits worth $1,800 for the 10 days of this workshop.

For the SIS CLASSROOM SCIENCE EXPERIENCES, UM's SIS Student Teams (each composed of a graduate student and an undergraduate student who are science majors) will assist SIS Summer Workshop teachers to implement the science modules, developed during the PS Science Summer Workshop, in their classrooms for 3 Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for seven weeks during one of the first three 8-week terms during the following academic year. A $500 "tool box" of equipment and supplies for teaching these modules is provided to each teacher in the SIS Program.

SIS Spring Review: All teachers who participate in the SIS Summer Workshop and participated in the SIS Classroom Science Experiences will be invited back to UM for a day to discuss with the SIS Team their experiences in teaching the Global Change Modules and modifications to the Program. Teachers will be paid $100 each to participate in this session.

Mentor Teachers: Three teachers who completed the SIS Summer Workshop and participated in the SIS Classroom Science Experiences will selected to work as Mentor Teachers, for pay, in the following summer's SIS Summer Workshop.
