Since the advent of the industrial revolution, synthetic chemicals have made our lives easier.  We depend on tons of pesticides to protect our crops, industrial chemicals for manufacturing, pharmaceuticals to improve health.  The use and disposal of these chemicals has not always been tightly regulated.  Their effect on the environment and on wildlife does not always show itself until much later.
