One of the first, recognized endocrine disruptors was actually a synthetic estrogen given to pregnant women between the 1940s and the 1970s.  Diethylstilbestrol or DES was given to prevent miscarriage.  The effects of DES are seen today in the children of women who took DES during pregnancy.
