CarsonŐs fears were not
unfounded. In the 1970s, high
concentrations of industrial polychlorinated biphenyls were found in eagles
and shore birds of the Great Lakes regions. Eggshell thinning, poor chick survival, morphological
deformities, and mating behavior abnormalities were some of the problems
these birds experienced. Like
Carson, Dr. Theo Colborn, who compiled the information on the effects of EDCs
on Great Lakes birds, fish and mammal populations, wrote the book Our Stolen
Future. The book was
instrumental in drawing connections between the effects of EDCs on wildlife
and their potential effects on humans.
