Dr. Lou Guillette found
unusually high concentrations of DDT in hatchling and juvenile alligators
from Lake Apopka in central Florida.
Not only were concentrations of an endocrine disruptor high, but male
alligators had unusually small phallus size, high concentrations of
estradiol, and supressed levels of testosterone. Females had polynuclear oocytes and high levels of
estradiol. DDT specifically
increases the bodyÕs metabolism of androgens.
