The first and third are western grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis) and the one in the middle is a
Clark’s grebe (Aechmophorus clarkii) Spanish
Landing (near the airport), San Diego, CA, USA. The Clark’s
grebe was a lifer for me. I always scan for a
Clark’s grebe every time that I see western grebes, hoping to
get lucky. I never went looking for Clark’s grebes
specifically because the thrill of hoping to see one among a group of
western grebes was more fun than going on a deliberate quest to see
one.
It sure made seeing a flock of western grebes more exciting to watch.
