Fishes ... and fishing

Needlefish (Strongylura marina) top and ballyhoo (Hemiramphus brasiliensis) bottom, Bahia Honda, Florida Everglades, FL, USA. 2007.
bonefish (Albula vulpes), Bahia Honda, Florida Keys, FL, USA. 2007. Unfortunately I cannot claim this fine specimen. Another fisherman who was fishing next to me was the lucky one. This one aggressively took a bait shrimp. It is at least 10 lbs.

Same fish as above.
Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA. 2006. The lake is fresh to brackish water because it is connected to the ocean. Salt water fish frequently enter it.

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), Lake Annie, Highlands County, FL, USA.
Mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus), University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA. 2006.

Bowfin or “mudfish” (Amia calva), Lake Annie, Highlands County, FL, USA. The only extant species of a primitive group of fish. I was so excited to catch this fish because I wanted to look at one closely. Sadly this fish is considered a trash species because it is voracious, eating gamefish. Also it bites lures annoying fisherman fishing for bass. I caught 9 bass, some of them quite large, but my favorite catch was this bowfin.
Peacock bass (Cichla ocellaris), C1 canal, Kendall, FL, USA. This small bass has quite different coloring than an adult peacock bass (right).
