| yellow slug, Santa Barbara, California, 2008. I
have no idea what species of slug this is but it sure is beautiful.
It was one of coolest animals that I saw on this trip to

Ants herding aphids. These ants are protecting
aphids
feeding on young aspen trees (Populus tremuloides). The ants attacked
ouer fingers if we touched the aspen or even approached the aphids with
our fingers or little sticks. The ants collect the the sugary
secretions from the aphids as they feed. Some ants herd the aphids out
onto the plants to feed then catch them and return them to their ant
holes for the night to protect them and release them the next
morning. I suspect these ants participate in this behavior,
too.
