Gayego wins MAHAB AL SHIMAAL - DAYJUR (gr. III)[3.17.2009]!

Gayego wins his only start in Dubai, and is looking good for the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I). With any luck he will join grade/group 1 winners from the Sexton Farms: Corinthian, Crustaceo, and Spanish Market.

On My Dime wins the Hangonslewpyhangon Stakes!
[3.3.2009]

On My Dime has been on a winning streak at Turf Paradise over the last few months after 4 wins in 5 starts. His 4th place finish in the Turf Paradise Handicap was his only loss in the last 5 races. Bingham won that race, but could not hold off a late run by On My Dime in the Hangonslewpyhangon Stakes. This is On My Dime's first stakes win.

Gayego sold to Sheikhs in Dubai to win the Golden Shasheen
[2.9.2009]

Winning a 6.5f allowance in a blazing 1:13.0 and setting track record at Santa Anita at the same time were enough to catch the attention of the sheikhs in Dubai who snatched Gayego up to try to win the $2,000,000 Golden Shasheen G1. The Golden Shasheen  has eluded the sheikhs since 1997.

Gayego placed 7th behind Into Mischief in the Damascus Stakes at Oak Tree at Santa Anita on 25 October 2008. This was not his old form that we saw in the Arkansas Derby. I hope he can return strong this year.

Marquee Event - Marquetry x Devil's Lake by Lost Code - placed second to Kick On in the $125,000 Remington MEC Mile Stakes for 2-year-olds at Remington Park on 19 October 2008. Indyanne was euthanized.
[2.4.2009]

Indyanne did not recover from the broken sesamoid and was put down. Losing an excellent runner like her and a potential excellent broodmare is doubly hard.

Indyanne broke down in the La Brea Stakes G1!
[12.21.2008]

Indyanne broke one of her sesamoids in the La Brea Stakes. She had earlier missed the Breeders' Cup Distaff after running a temperature for a few days prior to the race. She has a 65% chance of surviving to make a broodmare. I hope that she can hang on and become an excellent broodmare. Her dam Merchant sold in the November Mixed Stock Auction for $650,000. A rather surprising price considering the ailing economy and dismal sales figures.

Keeneland September Yearling Auction 2008 results
[9.27.2008]

A total of yearlings were entered in the sale this year. This year is not as lucrative as last year, but neither is the sale as a whole. The mean and median prices were 48,000 and 73,089, respectively, which were down by 52% and 115% from last year. The sale mean was also down from last year at  $90,089, which was 11.4% lower than last year. In all 2007 was a very successful year for Oakcrest Farm. The mean yearling price from the farm was 52.6% greather than the mean auction price. The 2008 Keenleand yearling sale was less successful, and the mean yearling price for Oakcrest Farm was 24.5% below the mean sale yearling price. Unfortunanetely the quality of yearlings, popularity/commerciality of stallions, and the health of the economy and racing industry make any one breeder's success quite between sales.

Found another stakes race won  by Fathayer
[9.23.2008]

Fathayer won the Premio Guido Berardelli (Ity-GIII,1.800m-T, Rome) for owner Scuderia Chemin De Fer. I did not know about because it was not in the USA. I wish I knew how he was doing presently.

Silent Valor earns his $320k price tag with an win in the Sapling Stakes G3!
[9.03.2008]

Silent Valor was last through the first 1/2 mile before he made his move on the turn for home. At the top of the stretch he was already pressing the leader. He won comfortably pulling away by 1 1/2 lengths. He definitely a horse to watch in the juvenile division, and we'll wait and see if he has classic potential like his sire had.

He comes from an excellent mare Few Choice Words that sadly died this year.  She had several good foals that never quite made it into the upper levels of horse racing due to injuries. Miss Jeanne Cat won the Time to Leave Stakes, and Well Said was stakes placed in the Mineshaft Stakes G3. Injuries after the Arkansas Derby where he was 4th a head behind 2nd and 3rd caused him to miss the classic races. At the end of his 3-year-old season he came back strong, only to get injured in the Mineshaft. Aitcho sold for $435K, but has yet to do anything. He was a beautiful, well-balanced, big yearling when he was sold. I can only imagine that he, too, is probably plagued with injuries.

Gayego places 11th in Preakness G1
[6.09.2008]

Gayego had a better trip in the Preakness than he did in the Kentucky Derby, but unfortunately he did not fair any better. He was up on the lead for much of the race until he gave way and faded to 11th. He has already earned approx. $750,000 this year, and maybe he can reach $1 million mark this year. Let's see what the rest of the season has in store for him.

Gayego places 17th in Kentucky Derby G1
[5.03.2008]

Too bad for Gayego. After breaking from the gates, he tried to get up front and  over closer to the rail, but he got stuck in traffic.
Mike Smith, his jockey, had to pull him up hard going in to the first turn.  Having to pull up so hard is never a good career chances of winning because the horse gets tired and loses momentum. He was rank early, and never appeared to settle down in the race.  However, no one in that race was going to beat Big Brown.

I was so sad in Eight Belles broke her two front ankles and collapsed on the track.  She is by Unbridled Song, so it is not surprising that she broke down.  Unbridled Song produces very fast but entirely unsound horses.  If people are cautious and give the horses more time, they incur many less injuries. I personally do not like this dying in because of his unsoundness issues. However, it is hard not to run as a two year old that is fast enough to win. Instead they run them hard and they break down early in their three-year-old  season. It is so sad.

Gayego won the Arkansas Derby G2!!

[4.21.2008]

After placing a fame second in the San Felipe Stakes G2 this California runner placed himself firmly on the who's who among Derby contenders 2008. He showed that it not only competitive on the synthetic surfaces but better on dirt. He showed that horses that are good on the synthetic surfaces in California can perform well back East on dirt tracks. He was the favorite against a group of horses wanted to prove themselves. He is by pedigree a sprinter, though he has several classic runners as ancestors. His trainer Paulo Loba told Mike Smith his jockey to put him out in front and try to keep him there as long as possible. Gayego stayed out there till the finish line!

He won the race that has produced more champions than any other Derby prep in recent years. Smarty Jones (champion 3 year old colt 2004 Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and second in the Belmont), Alfeet Alex (2005 champion 3-year old colt, Preakness and Belmont), Lawyer Ron (2007 champion older horse), Curlin (2007 Champion 3-year-old colt and Horse of the Year; Preakness, Jockey Gold Cup, Breeders Cup Classic, and Dubai World Cup) have all come out of the last the previous 4 runnings of the Arkansas Derby. I'm sure that the Arkansas Derby will soon be a a G1 race.

Gayego is the son of the recently moved stallion Gilded Time out of Devils Lake by Lost Code. He appears to be Oakcrest Farm's only chance for a Derby horse. He is an example of the sad disconnect between price and quality. He was a $32,000 Keeneland September yearling auction.

Stakes Appearances

Amazin Blue ran in the Forty Niner Stakes on 26 December 2007 at Golden Gate Fields and placed 7th. He trailed the field the entire race and only managed to pass Bwanna Bull on the front stretch. He has not made it to the winner circle since winning the Canadian Derby last year.

Indy's Alexandra soundly defeats field in Three Rings Stakes
[12.01.2007]

Indy's Alexandra - Flatter x Hey Ghaz by Ghazi- $100,000 Three Ring Stakes; Calder Race Course; 1 1/16 miles on the Dirt in 1:48.06; 1 December 2007; filly foaled 3 May 2005. I sadly forgot that the race was at Calder and did not see her win in person. Sheled wire to wire and won soundly over a field of 5. Though she was walking down the backstretch, they allowed her to have the lead. She did not even have to work to win this race. I hope the sow fractions are more indicative of the race and her  abilty to win against better fillies. Nonetheless, she won soundly and I hope that she has an excellent 3-year-old season!

Corinthian wins inaugural Breeders Cup Dirt Mile!

[10.26.2007]

It was such as inredible race. The race was in the slop and Corinthian and seldom run in the slop. He was a little uneasy/rank around the first turn but calmed down on the back stretch. After  calming down he quickly moved into position along the rail in third place. Around the final turn he took over the lead. As other horses were taking making their move he both held them off and pulled away, winning by 6 1/2 lengths. He should so much class.  What a special way to finish his career!

The Breeders' Cup was expanded to included 3 more races (dirt mile, filly and mare spirnt and the juvenile turf). Corinthian originally pointed to the Classic ran in the Dirt Mile instead. Corinthian is a proven 1 1/8 mile horse, but 1 1/4 miles appears to be beyond his best distance. He also won the Fountain of Youth Stakes (disqualified to thrid place) and Gulfstream Handicap at 1 1/8 and 1 3/16 miles respectively. He won the Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile) G1 and the BC Dirt Mile, meaning that we won the top two most important dirt mile races in the United States.

He will be sold to Gainesway Farm for a price of $10 million. The original price was $8 million but the contract detailed that if he won a Breeders Cup race, the price would increase by $2 million. He will stand in 2008 for $40,000 live foal guarantee.

He has the potential of being a very good stallion because of his miler class and excellent female famly. His sire Pulpit is a modestly successful sire ($80,000 stud fee) who is the son of the most important sire in the nation A P Indy.

Vitruvius finishes last in the Jerome H. G2

Vitruvius finished last in the Jerome Handicap G2 at Belmont Park on Sunday. I am not sure what happened to Vitruvius, but he was finished at the 1/2 mile pole. As soon as we settle into 4th position, he had enough. I hope that he is not hurt. I wonder if he is just not ready for the big dances because he is so lightly raced. Of course, that brings up the question: why is he so lightly raced?

In
racing news, Multiply's 2-year-old daughter, Be Fruitful, is inntraining with Jimmy Jerkens who is training Corinthian and Vitruvius.

Vitruvius second in Saratoga allowance

[09.01.2007]

Vitruvius should have been worse than second, considering how he ran but his ability comspensated for his immaturity. He weaved in and out along the backstretch, wasting valuble energy and time. At the top of the stretch he continued his antics, drifting out before finally digging in and finally getting up to take second. The 7f race was not particularly fast for the day, 1:23.97. The other 7f race was the Grade 1 Forego Handicap, which was won in 1:21.06. Vitruvius should have been able to run 7f faster than he did. His excessive weaving cost the race. Now that he is back in action and still running well, I impatiently await for his stakes debut.

Corinthian finishes 4th in the Woodward Stakes G1

[09.01.2007]

Corinthian started out the race at the back of the pack but moved forward to 3rd on the 2nd turn. By the top of the stretch he was 2nd to a fast accelerating Lawyer Ron. Along the stretch Corinthian tired and was passed by Sun King and Diamond Stripes. However, no one was going to catch Lawyer Ron who took the lead after 5f and never reliquinshed it. On the far turn Lawyer Ron lengthened his lead from 1/2 length to 8 1/4 lengths. the last 1/4 mile. I am not sure what happened to Corinthian other than he tired. I wish that I could explain why. He had won most  (maybe all) of his races at 9-9.5f, so the distance is not a problem. He should have lasted more than 8.5f like he did. Maybe he moved too early, but I hardly fault that for his less than expected performance.

If he continues to tire on the stretch, maybe the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile is not a better place for him than the BC Classic.

Amazin Blue finishes 6th in Canadian Derby G3

[08.15.2007]

Unfortuately Amazin Blue did not add a second stakes win to his resume. Earlier this year he won the Alberta Derby.

Corinthian finishes last in the Suburban G1

[06.30.2007]

Corinthian after being in contention for the first mile quickly faded to last in the last 1/4 mile. Of his well-behaved races, he has only had one other lackluster performance when he finished third in an allowance at Belmont last year.  It turned out that he has skin disease that was ailing him. I am not sure if the poor performance in the Suburban was due to some type of injury/ailment or the distance. I have not heard anything about an injury though. I am skeptical that the defeat can be explained in too long of a distance because he barely stayed a mile. He stayed the 1 3/16 miles distance of the Gulfstream Handicap and the 1 1/8 mile allowance that he won by 9 1/2 length over Jazil (2006 Belmont winner).

Overall I was very disappointed.  I had such high hopes. Maybe this was just a bad race, and he will preform better next time. However, if the distance is the problem, then Breeders Cup Dirt Mile would be a better year-end finisher for him than the 1 1/4 mile BC Classic. He preformed his best in the Met Mile, so maybe the shorter distance will be a more competitive substitute for the Classic.

Amazin Blue wins the Alberta Derby

Amazin Blue (Marquetry x Niner by Forty Niner) won in a pedestrian 1:46.4. He has 3 wins to his name so far, and we should see him in more stakes races in the future.  His brother Engineered (by Langfuhr) is stakes-placed (2nd King Cotton Stakes).

Corinthian runs in the Suburban Handicap G1 at Belmont

[06.24.2007]

Corinthian will attempt to stamp an indellible mark on the older horse division this Saturday (30 July). He was going to run against Invasor, the reigning world champion and US Horse of the Year, but INVASOR was injured in a workout this week. He will rest and prepare for stallion duties next year. INVASOR was an excellent horse, which made me worried about Corinthian's chances but excited for the competition. I now think that Corinthian will show these horses who the best really is. The 1 1/8 mile race will suit Corinthian nicely.  It will be on TV, so watch it!

In other news Lava Man will try to enter the books with Native Dancer as the only horse to win 3 editions of the Hollywood Cup G1.

Corinthian wins the Met Mile G1!!

[05.30.2007]

Corinthian won the Metropolitan Handicap G1.  He was close to the lead in 4th until he made his move on the turn to take the lead at the top of the stretch.  Before his ability was more speculated potential, but now it is proven talent.  He won over a good group of horses.  Now he has won the Gulfstream Handicap G2 and the Met Mile G1 and is 3 for 4 on the year and 6 wins in 9 lifetime starts (I don't acknowledge the disqualification in the Fountain of Youth).

He is a hot-blooded and is miserable to handle.  He is easily upsetable.  He reared up in the gate at Gulfstream last year and was scratched.  This year in the Excelcier G3 he reared up when the gate open, which put him hopelessly behind, and he was only able to improve his position to 5th.

Master Command, Invasor, and Corinthian are the best older horses in the nation right now and the leading contenders for end-of-year honors.

Though she was unraced, she was a proven producer.  She first produced DESERT HERO from Sea Hero who won the San Raphael G2 in California and ran in the Kentucky Derby.  Sadly he died before he could enter stud.  In 2000 she produced a Theatrical filly TRIPLE ACT who sold hor $2.2 million.  The next year her Gone West filly EMTYAZAT sold for $850,000.   In 2001 she foaled CORINTHIAN, a $385,000 Pulpit yearling who became her second graded stakes winner.  Later in 2004 VITRUVIUS (by E Dubai) was born and was sold to Centennial Farms (the same farm that bought CORINTHIAN) for $110,000.  He is easier to handle than his older brother and may be just as talented.  Jimmy Jerkens, their trainer, thinks that he is more talented.  Lastly Multiply produced a full sister to CORINTHIAN named BE FRUITFUL and a Silver Deputy foal last year.

As the old racing saying goes, it is once the mare dies that her produce does their best.  Sadly this has proved true. First CORINTHIAN wins the Met Mile, and we have not yet seen the best of VITRUVIUS and possibly BE FRUITFUL who is a nice looking filly.
