These males are growing in their summer breeding plummage. Unfortuanately I have never seen an adult in full breeding plummage.

These individuals are either female or in winter plummage.  I have seen this species on the Gulf Coast in Louisiana, California, and Florida. Prior to seeing the first individual in Louisiana, I had spent numerous hours on the beach in Mexico and California without ever seeing a single individual. However, after seeing my first individual I see them regularly on any beach that I am visiting.
