Research Interests:


To date little is known about the soil-plant continuum in dune systems.My dissertation research investigates the spatial patterns and temporal fluctuations of hydrologic conditions within vadose soils, and the relationship between hydrologic conditions and physiological response of vegetation on coastal dunes.It is especially important to understand dune systems under present conditions because global sea level rise and depletion of coastal water tables are two processes that are predicted to increase soil salinity of coastal areas by means of ocean water intrusion.The sand dune ecosystem, important biologically and economically, will be among the first coastal vegetation communities affected by elevated salinity.This work will help to assess the impact of altered hydrology on dune vegetation.


Areas of interest are:

1.      Vadose hydrology of dunes (soil surface to the fresh water lens)

2.      Plant ecological physiology .

3.      Oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes as water tracers:


Current study sites are dune systems on three subtropical islands:

        Key Biscayne, Fl, USA

        Dead Manís Reef, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas

        East Beach, San Salvador Island, Bahamas


Fore dune, Bill Baggs State Park, Key Biscayne, Florida


The Thumb, San Salvador Island, Bahamas
