The sleeper goby, Dormitator latifrons, a hearing generalized species. Hearing generalized fishes have relatively low hearing sensitivity and a narrow frequency response range due to a lack of specialized auditory accessories and a long distance between the swim bladder and inner ear. These fish were originally obtained from Ecuador, and are housed in freshwater tanks. The dorsal and anal fins of males become brownish when they reach maturity. They can grow as large as 100 cm.

The goldfish, Carassius auratus, a hearing specialized species. Hearing specialized fishes have specialized auditory accessories, such as the Weberian ossicles that connect the swim bladder to the inner ear, or have gas-filled chambers that are acoustically coupled to the ear. This coupling results in greater auditory sensitivity and a broad frequency response range. The goldfish are also housed in freshwater tanks.
